Simultaneous interpreting

Simultaneous interpreting is undoubtedly the most difficult type of interpreting. It is oral linguistic interpretation, usually taking place in a soundproof booth. The source text is transmitted via headphones to the interpreter, who translates it into the target language via a microphone. The message then reaches the headphones of participants in, for example, a conference or meeting.

To become a simultaneous interpreter, excellent language skills are not enough. Interpreting of this kind requires excellent diction, resistance to stress, above-average ability to focus and divided attention.

In addition, the interpreter works under enormous time pressure. Therefore, it is essential that the simultaneous interpreter is also familiar with the industry they serve, is sensitive to the context and possible cultural differences, and has an understanding of so-called general knowledge issues. An understanding of politics and business in the broader sense is also undoubtedly useful.

All these skills are verified during training at language schools or university centres.

Simultaneous interpreting is certainly extremely demanding and, regardless of your skills and knowledge of the language in question, you also have to simply like the job.

Simultaneous interpreting advantages:

  • Time efficiency: Participants do not have to wait until the end of the speech to hear the interpretation.
  • Fluidity of communication: Enables the dynamic flow of the event.
  • Multilingual support: Possibility of simultaneous interpreting into multiple languages.

Simultaneous interpreting is otherwise known as parallel

They take place in parallel to the speaker’s speech in the foreign language. There is no time for consultation or asking the speaker to repeat their speech. Hence, this work requires particular concentration, especially when messages are communicated in an unintelligible manner.

Often the translator works in the so called booth which is generally not the most spatious. Due to the exceptional mental strain of this type of interpreting, interpreters change every 15-30 minutes.

Simultaneous interpreting is very popular especially during international congresses and conferences, but also seminars, deliberations and training sessions. There is also a demand for this service during secret business or political negotiations and, for example, meetings of international executives in large companies. In such cases, the interpreter signs a confidentiality agreement. We want our business partners to feel comfortable and be able to concentrate fully on the meeting, negotiation or presentation in question.
